Novenario marca el modo en que les artistas imaginan la transformación del estado de dolor y pérdida a un estado de potencialidad; donde la rabia, el dolor y la belleza insisten en coexistir. Esta exhibición busca poner de relieve el trabajo del duelo pintado, trazado, fotografiado, tejido, esculpido, danzado, cantado y escrito partiendo de grandes eventos devastadores de los siglos 20 y 21. Estos hechos se han acumulado en el archivo artístico, sin necesariamente haber hecho una entrada en la historia del arte local, como fragmentos de quizás los hechos más transformadores de nuestras breves vidas.
Las obras seleccionadas conmemoran novenarios imaginarios para nombrar el trabajo del duelo. Marcan los nueve meses de gestación de vidas nuevas, los nueve días y noches en que se reúnen diversas comunidades espirituales de Puerto Rico a rezar rosarios, a tocar tambores o a esperar la trascendencia del espíritu. Es el místico número nueve de los ciclos vitales y los resignificados territorios del duelo en la obra de artistas contemporáneos de Puerto Rico de distintas generaciones y prácticas. Sin embargo, aquí el duelo no es un recuento historiográfico de la tragedia, sino que propone un sentimiento compartido que quiere ser mediado por el arte y el recuerdo de sus espectadorxs de hoy, sobrevivientes del huracán María (2017), terremotos (2020) y la pandemia Covid-19 (2020-presente). Ciertamente, la exhibición también quiere dialogar y duelar-doler con aquellxs que no conocen esta historia. Aspiramos a que estas obras provean un sentido de cómo se transforma el dolor en otras realidades, materialidades y sueños.

Novenario marks the mode in which artists imagine the transformation from a state of pain and loss to a state of potential; where anger, pain, and beauty insist on co-existing. This exhibition proposes to highlight the labor of mourning that is painted, drawn, photographed, weaved, sculpted, danced, sang, and written, stemming from devastating events of the 20th and 21st centuries. These events have accumulated in the artistic archive, without necessarily having made an entry into the local history of art, as fragments of perhaps the most transformative events in our brief lives.
The artwork selected commemorates imaginary novenaries; nine night ceremonies to name the work of mourning. It marks the nine months of gestation of new lives, the nine days and nights in which different spiritual communities gather in Puerto Rico to say rosaries, play drums or to wait for the passing of the spirit. It is the mystical number nine of life cycles and the re-signified territories of mourning in the work of several contemporary artists from Puerto Rico of different generations and practices. However, mourning here does not account for a historiographical retelling of tragedy; rather, it proposes a shared artistic sentiment that wishes to be mediated by the gaze and the memory of its spectators today: survivors of Hurricane Maria (2017), earthquakes (2020) and the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-present). Certainly, the exhibition also wants to dialogue and mourn with those who don’t know this history, in hopes that the work shown here provides a sense of how pain is transformed into other realities, materialities, and dreams.
